About the Route

The Amata is Latvia's most exciting whitewater river, and this route starting from Melturi takes you through its most technical upper section. Fast water, continuous rapids and tight bends demand solid paddling skills and experience on moving water — not suitable for beginners. The river cuts through a narrow, steep-sided gorge with ancient forest pressing in on both sides, creating an enclosed and intensely wild atmosphere. Despite the remoteness, the route is manageable in a full day. The finish at Veclauçu tilts bridge offers a peaceful forest setting in welcome contrast to the river's energy upstream. Safety equipment is mandatory.
