About the Route

Starting near the iconic Zvārtes iezis — one of Latvia's most photographed sandstone cliffs — this Amata route is for confident paddlers only. The river is narrow, fast and technically demanding, with numerous rapids and drops requiring skill to navigate safely. The gorge scenery is exceptional: ancient forest, dramatic rock faces and crystal-clear water rarely seen from the road. The route ends at the quiet Veclauçu bridge, a calming contrast after the river's intensity upstream. Allow a full day and carry a rescue kit. This is the most challenging river route we offer, and one of the most rewarding for paddlers with the experience to handle it.
