About the Route
An introduction to one of Latvia's most beautiful and least-known rivers, the Salaca. Starting from the town of Mazsalaca, this one-day route follows the river through forest and meadow, with the Salaca's characteristic amber-tinted, crystal-clear water accompanying you throughout. The current is gentle but present, making for easy and enjoyable paddling. The route already shows the river's wild personality: overhanging alders, mossy banks, sandy shallows and the occasional glimpse of fish in clear water. The Salaca is one of Latvia's most important salmon rivers, and Līču skola campsite at the finish offers a comfortable end to the day.
What You'll See Along the Way
Wild river feel from day one
Even this short section shows the Salaca's character — swift current, overhanging alders and glimpses of the sandy banks that make it special.
Crystal-clear water
The Salaca is one of Latvia's cleanest rivers; on calm stretches you can see right to the riverbed through its amber-tinted water.
Salmon river heritage
The Salaca is one of Latvia's most important salmon rivers — listen for splashing in the shallows, especially in autumn.
