About the Route
Latvia's most famous one-day paddle, and for good reason. The stretch from Līgatne to Sigulda passes some of the Gauja's most dramatic scenery: towering sandstone cliffs streaked red and ochre, overhanging forest, and the landmark Gutmanis Cave carved into the cliff face — the largest cave in the Baltic states, with inscriptions dating back to the 16th century. The river is calm and accessible throughout, making this suitable for all paddlers. The route ends in Sigulda, Latvia's adventure tourism capital, with Turaida Castle and medieval ruins easily visited after the paddle. Allow 4 to 6 hours on the water.
