About the Route
A two-day forest journey along the Salaca from Mazsalaca to the historic Vīku bridge, covering the river's most secluded and nature-rich section. Much of the route passes through unbroken forest, with the river threading between mossy, alder-lined banks in deep green quiet. Birdlife is exceptional here: black storks, kingfishers and ospreys are regular sightings for those who paddle quietly. Sandy riverbanks offer good overnight camping on night one. The finish at Vīku tilts is a fitting, peaceful end to a properly wild river journey. One of the most beautiful routes in northern Latvia.
