About the Route
A gentle introduction to paddling Latvia's most celebrated river. Starting from Strenči at the edge of Gauja National Park, this one-day route follows a wide, calm stretch of water through mixed forest and open meadow banks. The current is relaxed and ideal for families, beginners, and anyone after a peaceful day on the water. The route ends beneath the medieval red-brick ruins of Valmiera's Livonian castle tower — a quietly dramatic backdrop for the final kilometres. Transport back from Valmiera is straightforward. A great warm-up paddle before tackling the more scenic sections further downstream in the national park.
