About the Route
Paddle the upper Gauja from Valmiera to medieval Cēsis on this relaxed one-day route. The river here is wide and calm, flowing past alternating meadow banks and forested stretches — well suited to families and paddlers new to river kayaking. Occasional sandstone outcrops appear along the banks as you move closer to the national park boundary. The day ends right in the centre of Cēsis, one of Latvia's most charming historic towns, with the medieval castle just a short walk from the take-out. A great choice for combining a day on the water with sightseeing in one of Latvia's most visited towns.
